Jack Rodwell and Louis Saha on target as Everton beat Melbourne Heart

• Everton record second win on tour of Australia
• Louis Saha misses early penalty in 2-0 win

Everton continued their pre-season preparations with a comfortable 2-0 friendly win over the Australian side Melbourne Heart.

Jack Rodwell and Louis Saha were both on target as Everton won for the second time on their tour following their weekend defeat of Sydney FC.

Saha fired an early penalty wide before Rodwell turned home a Seamus Coleman cross after 34 minutes.

The Frenchman made amends for his miss by making the result safe on the hour with a strike from the edge of the box.

The Everton manager David Moyes handed debuts to the forwards Jermaine Beckford and Joao Silva while the Australia World Cup midfielder Tim Cahill played his last game before beginning a belated summer break.

Tim Cahill sidelined by calf injury at pivotal juncture for Everton

• Cahill almost certain to miss Manchester United fixture
• Midfielder in danger of missing vital Europa League return leg

Everton could be without Tim Cahill for a pivotal week in their season after the Australia midfielder damaged a calf muscle during the 2-1 Europa League win over Sporting at Goodison Park on Tuesday night.

David Moyes, the Everton manager, is expected to discover the full extent of Cahill’s injury today but the 30-year-old is almost certainly out of tomorrow’s home Premier League match with Manchester United and there are concerns that he will also miss the return leg against Sporting in Lisbon on Thursday.

Everton then complete a demanding month of fixtures with a game against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday week, when the player may again be absent.

Cahill had been in fine form and he was involved in both Everton goals against the Portuguese side on Tuesday before pulling up on the hour. His loss would be particularly felt against Sporting, in a match in which Everton must defend a precarious first-leg advantage in a competition that offers them their last hope of silverware this season.

Moyes will be without both of his first choice centre-halves, Sylvain Distin and John Heitinga, in Portugal due to suspension and ineligibility respectively. The French defender is banned as a result of the professional foul that led to Sporting’s 87th-minute penalty which earned them their precious away goal. Everton’s recent loan signing Philippe Senderos, who missed the first leg with a back problem, is expected to be fit for the second meeting in Lisbon.

Galatasaray give Everton chance to make profit on Lucas Neill

• David Moyes may reluctantly accept fee for defender
• Australian was signed on a free until end of season

Galatasaray may give Everton a dilemma over whether to accept a transfer fee for Lucas Neill this month after reviving their interest in the Australia international.

Neill was signed on a free transfer by David Moyes in September having been without a club following his departure from West Ham United, and has featured regularly in an Everton defence depleted by injury.

The 31-year-old is under contract at Goodison Park until the end of the season and Everton, who are interested in the Sheffield United defender Matthew Kilgallon, would make a swift and unexpected profit, in the region of £800,000, should the Turkish club move for a player they tried to sign last summer.

With Joseph Yobo away at the Africa Cup of Nations, however, Sylvain Distin injured and Phil Jagielka recovering from a ruptured cruciate, Moyes will face an awkward decision should a firm bid arrive.

Neill’s fellow Australian, the former Liverpool player Harry Kewell, plays for Galatasaray.
