Leighton Baines commits to Everton until 2015

• Left-back becomes third player to sign long-term deal
• Everton sign French youth international Magaye Gueye

Leighton Baines has become the third Everton player to commit his long-term future to the club this summer by signing a new contract that will keep him at Goodison Park until 2015.

The 25-year-old, who was a surprise omission from Fabio Capello’s final 23-man England squad for the World Cup, had two years remaining on the deal he signed upon joining Everton from Wigan Athletic for £6m in 2007.

However, in recognition of his excellent form last season, and in keeping with David Moyes’s policy of securing his main players on long term contracts, Baines has now signed an improved five-year contract. He joins Tim Cahill and Jack Rodwell in committing himself to Everton this summer.

Everton have also completed the signing of the France Under-21 international, Magaye Gueye, from Strasbourg for a fee of around £1m. The 19-year-old striker becomes the fourth player to move to Goodison this summer following two other forwards, Jermaine Beckford and João Silva, and the Slovakia goalkeeper Jan Mucha.

Arsène Wenger admits admiration for ‘busy’ Steven Pienaar

• Midfielder has just one year left of contract with Everton
• ‘He would get into the Arsenal team,’ says manager

Arsène Wenger has expressed his admiration for Steven Pienaar and claimed the Everton midfielder would get into his Arsenal side.

Pienaar, who is currently with the South Africa World Cup squad, has just one year remaining on his contract at Goodison Park and while talks on an extension have been ongoing, it seems a deal is unlikely to be agreed during the finals.

That leaves open the possibility of clubs, such as Arsenal, making a move for the 28-year-old before he secures his future with Everton. “Pienaar has grown this year,” Wenger told Sky Sports. “He was usually a very busy player where the final ball was missing a little bit, but this year he has gained in personality and he has kept his work rate, so he has been much more efficient.

“What also played a big role in his growth was that Mikel Arteta was not there for a while and that he had to take the responsibility of being the playmaker of the team.

“He was one of the best players in England this year. He would get into the Arsenal team. I always had an eye on him since he was at Ajax.”

Everton sign former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford

• Beckford agrees four-year deal with Everton
• Striker departs Leeds United after prolific spell

Everton have announced the signing of the former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford, strengthening David Moyes’s attacking options for next season.

The 26-year-old was released from his Leeds contract – which was due to expire this summer – last week, enabling the Merseyside club to secure his services without a transfer fee. He has agreed a four-year deal after passing a medical.

Beckford scored 31 goals for the Yorkshire club last season, the last of which came on the final day against Bristol Rovers, which won promotion from League One. He also scored the goal at Old Trafford which knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup.

The London-born forward spent four seasons at Leeds, where he scored 72 goals in 126 league appearances.
